Oral Thrush

Oral thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth and throat caused by the fungus Candida albicans; also known as Candidiasis. Regulation of the candida albicans fungus is a normal function of the immune system and Thrush occurs when this regulation is impaired and/or diminished.

Oral thrush lesions are white, lightly raised patches or sores on the tongue or mucosa which are often painful. They may bleed when scraped by a toothbrush or floss.

Most adult Thrush is caused by compromise of the immune system from: the daily use of one or more presciptive medications, various medical procedures, diseases, conditions, poor oral hygiene and/or sexual transmission.

Care

The goal of care is to control the growth of the yeast fungus Candida Albicans, to provide relief from thrush symptoms and to prevent reoccurrence.  However, in most cases, outbreaks will continue to reoccur, even after utilizing prescriptive antifungal medications and/or vitamin supplements. Typically, the reasons for reoccurrence lie in the body’s inability to properly regulate the amount of candida in the oral cavity - a function of our immune system. An overwhelming number of cases are tied to the use of medications - both prescriptive and Over The Counter - that are used to treat primary illness and negatively impact either salivary production or the antimicrobial function of saliva.
